When it comes to nutrition, many of us follow what we read in magazines or hear from our friends without really knowing what we're getting ourselves into. Jimmy Kimmel does a great sketch that perfectly exemplifies this point; a member of the talk show host's crew heads to the streets of Los Angeles to talk to people who are avoiding gluten, finding plenty of willing subjects as they go. What they don't find, however, is anyone who can actually tell them what gluten is or why they think it's so essential that they avoid it.
Omega-3 fatty acids seem to fall into this camp, too. Many consumers have heard the term (and are willing to scoop up foods and supplements with that boast omega-3s on their label), but aren't exactly sure what benefit they're providing. Omega-3s are a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid that are an essential component in keeping our metabolisms running, as well as potentially reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity and certain types of cancer.
